Each year, a group of us in Santa Cruz California get together and put hygiene kits together for the homeless.
Often, a homeless person will have a job interview or other meeting that can make the difference for them to get back on their feet. These kits help them clean up, and are the most prized item around the holidays at the homeless shelter here. Last year we put together almost 200 kits. Help us top that number this year. Here are the items we need:
I met an old friend at the Museum of Art and History in Santa Cruz on the first friday this November. After hugs and a little catching up, she confided in me that she'd just seen a show of exquisite pastels around the corner that changed her world. I knew exactly who she was talking about because I'd just been there myself. The artist is Erika Perloff, and the show is up through the end of November at the Artisan's Gallery. If you do anything in November, please see this show.
We descend on the SF Museum of Modern Art and cover an urban sculpture in white lycra. A much higher quality audio file is available, so email me if you want it.
More pictures are available on Jeanne's photo album.
It's not as if searching is useless. It's just that it won't always work. There's an old story I've heard of a young man on his vision quest. He goes out multiple times, beating his chest, screaming for a vision. He fails every time to get a vision. And each time he fails, he goes out with more ferver, determined that his vision will come, and will be special. Finally, he just gives up. He goes out one last time, but he really doesn't expect anything. Buy yhat's when his vision comes. The wise old woman who told me this story said, "the universe cannot be commanded" and I agree. Neither can our unconcious be forced to deliver. Sometimes you've got to just get down off it, and the answer will come.
Stop Talking: Page 2 of the Book of Power. The trouble with being quiet, some people think, is that then you'll be subject to other people's thoughts. How do you know that the little voice is really yours, and does not belong to your mother or father, or significant other? Well, you don't, but you can let your body be your guide. Once you hear the voice inside, check for where it lives in your body. Listen to it. If it's coming from the depths, it may be speaking in metaphor rather than about the mundane.

Why are we born? Why do we die? Why do we spend so much time in between wearing digital watches?
This is the first page of the book of power. The circle is a brush painting meditation. Once the brush is placed on the page, the circle must be created quickly, otherwise all the ink will drain out at the starting place. One complete circle. It's part of the meditation for me that no circle is perfect. Each brush drawing is different. Each moment—even if repeating the same task over and over again—is different.
